AUDIENCE RESEARCH:

BLUMLER & KATZ MODEL OF AUDIENCE BEHAVIOUR MODEL.
(Uses and Gratifications Model)

One of the main reasons someone may watch a British Social Realism film is because it is easy to identify with a character, or their situation, or for surveillance.
It is easier for a British audience to relate to this genre of film as the characters are true to British life and the locations are recognisable

CINEMA STATISTICS ACROSS THE UK
(January - December 2009)

As you can see, the most popular distributors in 2009 were Paramount, Warner Bros and 20th Century Fox
The only two British Films in the table are Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Slumdog Millionaire.

UK CINEMA ADMISSIONS
(2010)

From this table, I can see that the most profitable month to release a film is July as most people visited the cinema during this month. However, the least profitable month to release a film would be in June as this is when the least amount of people visited the cinema. Saying this, however, releasing a British Social Realism in June may be more profitable in July as it wouldn't have to compete with so many Hollywood blockbusters which people would choose over a small British film.

TOP FILMS WORLDWIDE
(2009)

This table shows me that British films, especially those of the Social Realism genre, are not successful across the globe. This is most likely because Social Realism films are very culturally biased and would only appeal to those in Britain. However, Hollywood films appeal to millions of people across the globe and are enivitably more popular and therefore more successful.
